I have 2 Roku boxes, best investment I ever made.  Beats AppleTV hands down, less expensive than GoogleTV with more content.  Hulu Plus is coming before the end of the year, probably in testing now. The amount of content is AMAZING. Most content is free, but a few require an external subscription like the upcoming Hulu Plus.

The ORIGINAL PlayOn channel created by Scyber over at the Roku forums works beautifully with the Roku box.  The "Official" PlayOn channel which appears to be almost a direct rip-off of his work that was "created" well after he made his incredible channel, crashes the Roku and causes it to restart, and does not work very well at all.  If you purchase a Roku box, use this PlayOn channel as it is the original. It works well, and it is updated regularly:

I have an HD-XR which is an older model, 720p only and 5.1 surround (42 inch LCD TV 5.1 surround HDMI).  I also have the XD|S which is the top of the line current model, 1080p, 5.1 surround, all the bells and whistles (60 inch LCD TV, 7.1 surround, HDMI).  For $59 to $99, a ONE TIME payment for hardware, you can't beat this.  Quite a few folks are already ditching cable.  5 private channels (user created) have been created this week alone.

If you are interested in buying one, please consider using my link?  It will give me a free month of Netflix.

Haven't bought one yet. Thought I'd do a wait and see. Roku seemed like a good way to go. Not good.

I have two of them, and they are among the best things I have ever bought.  They still provide a ton of content, Hulu Plus before the end of the year, and DLNA is in the works as we speak.  The boxes just keep improving.  I understand the reasoning behind them pulling the PlayOn channels and cannot fault them for it. I still recommend buying a Roku box, you will not be sorry.

@y0himba, Thanks. I might still buy one to check it out. It's cheap enough. Can't understand what caused Roku to determine that the Playon channel involved copyright infringement though. Does anyone know? As I understood, Mediamall stood by the third party channel developer all the way and started to promote his work.

Just jumped the fence to see what's happening and all of the Roku forums are down at the moment. Hmmmmmm.....

Well. I researched it. Seems that Roku is completely and utterly fixated with blocking PlayOn at all costs. This is a no go and never will be. Forget it folks. Find a different device. Many, many better ones out there than Roku. Don't waste your time with it. Time to move on...

I purchased a Roku and it seemed to work ok. What was disappointing was the lack of private channels available, unlike Playon scripts or Plugins. Also the channel store has mainly channels that require a fee. The only channel that seemed worth it was SUNIMI, a free service. You could watch all the Public Domain Movies on Archive.org.  This unit just wasn’t worth it to me, so I took it back and purchased a WD Live Plus to work with my Playon.  Money better invested. The WD Live Plus has You Tube & Netflix and works perfectly with Playon. Money better invested. Also Roku seems political not to support a technology that might compete with Cable or Hulu which Comcast has their hands on.
